The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the weekend, in Enugu, assured Nigerians that it would not indulge in acts that would make the country become a one-party state.
National Deputy Chairman of the party, Segun Oni, made this promise at a ceremony organised to receive renowned politician and former governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chief Gbazuagu Nweke Gbazuagu at his ward at Agbugoeze Ward in Oji River Local Government.
Oni, however, pointed out that since the APC formed the government at the centre, it would be stronger to win other future elections.
He expressed optimism that the party would be in a stronger position to win the 2019 elections even as he assured that future elections would become more perfect and transparent.
Describing APC as a platform of all progressives, he called on those still outside the fold to come home and join the party.
Oni said they were happy that Gbazuagu decided to come back, and described him as a grassroots politician and a man of principle.
Similarly, spokesman of South-East APC leadership caucus, Mr Osita Okechukwu, said he was also opposed to one-party state, saying that he only opposed Chief Jim Nwobodo joining the party as he believed “that those who used PDP as a platform to loot Nigeria should remain in PDP and salvage it.”
Okechukwu, who was also at Agbugoeze to receive Gbazuagu into the APC said: “Don’t forget as well that Gbazuagu Nweke Gbazuagu (GNG) is a foundation member and gubernatorial candidate of the defunct
“All Peoples Party (APP) in 1999, before he went on political sabbatical leave. ANPP, an offshoot of APP, is one of the legacy parties, which merged into APC. Therefore, GNG is not a defector at all.”
He called on party members to support President Muhammadu Buhari for eight years for Ndigbo to harvest from the zoning convention.
Earlier, the Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye expressed happiness that Gbazuagu was back to the party.
Nwoye said he was happy that people were now embracing the party, noting that in the past, only a few of them were bold enough to market the party to the masses in the state.
Speaking, Gbazuagu thanked the special delegation of the party and other members for coming to receive him.
He promised that he would work to cement the broken walls in the APC in the state, noting that having been in the opposition for a long time, he knew how opposition parties were rigged out in previous elections.
Gbazuagu was later registered by his ward party chairman and handed over to party officials in the state, zonal and national offices.
