Anambra Central rerun: PDP may name Chidoka as candidat
Baring any change in plan, a former minister for Aviation, Osita Chidoka may emerge the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the rerun election in Anambra Central Senatorial District.
Daily Sun investigation revealed that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP and the state chapter of the party may have concluded plans to nominate Chidoka, former boss of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) as the party’s candidate.
A month ago, the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu, based on a suit filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, nullified Senator Uche Ekwunife of the PDP’s election and ordered a fresh poll for Anambra Central. One of the reasons given by the court for the annulment was that Ekwunife was not validly nominated by her party.
But, before the rescheduled polls, Ekwunife defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and vowed to win the party primary and the subsequent election, although Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, who was the APC candidate in the March 28, 2015 National Assembly election, had said she would not get an automatic ticket.
Chidoka served in the administrations of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, the late Umaru Yaradua and Goodluck Jonathan in different capacities, while Umeh was the national chairman of APGA for over four years before his resignation.
Ekwunife was a member of the House of Representatives on the platform of the PDP, but later defected to the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) and she was its candidate in the 2014 governorship poll in the state. She subsequently defected to APGA, and later returned to the PDP on which platform she won a seat to represent Anambra Central in the Senate last year.
