Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, yesterday signed the N662.588 billion 2016 Appropriation Bill into law with a promise that the budget will be implemented to the letter.
Ambode said the 2016 budget was the article of faith of his administration with Lagosians and it was in line with delivering on the promises made to the people.
He said: “The 2016 budget of N662.588 billion will enable our government focus on the present challenges of security, traffic gridlock resolution, including physical and social infrastructure developments which have thrown up new challenges quite different from our past experience.”
He thanked the House of Assembly for speedy passage of the bill, which he presented to the House on December 17 and was passed on December 31, saying it was no mean feat.
Meanwhile, Lagos State House of Assembly has approved 70 years as the retirement age for lecturers at the Lagos State University (LASU).
The Assembly took this resolution yesterday as it considered a bill for a law to amend the LASU Law, 2004 and other connected purposes’ .
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), LASU chapter, had through its Chairman, Dr. Adekunle Idris, suggested that professors in the university be allowed to retire at the age of 70 instead of the current age of 65 that operates in the school.
Idris said most of the professors leave the university for private universities and others in the country to seek greener pastures and work till age 70 after retiring in LASU at age 65.
The Assembly also approved a single-year tenure of five years for the vice chancellor of the university and other principal officers of the university such as deputy vice chancellor, registrar, bursar and the librarian, saying those who are serving in the university now would also benefit.
The bill makes provisions for the Governing Council of the institution to appoint the vice chancellor (VC), which would be approved by the governor of the state. The VC shall hold office for a single term of five years and may be removed from office by the Governing Council over gross misconduct or as a result of inability to discharge his duties over infirmity of the body or mind, and there shall be no sole administrator in the university.
