The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, says Nigerians need to acknowledge the bravery of officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces, both in protecting the territorial integrity of the nation and keeping the country united.
Ambode spoke at the Lagos House, Marina, while inaugurating the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal.
He said all citizens must also show appreciation to gallant fallen heroes through donations for the upkeep of the widows and children they left behind.
He said such acknowledgement would assure those that were still in active service that their efforts and sacrifices would not be in vain.
He said, “As we speak, officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces are on the battlefield. They have continued to demonstrate bravery and courage in order to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our nation.
“I urge everybody, especially our corporate organisations, to donate generously to this noble cause in recognition of the sacrifices of our fallen heroes.”
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mrs. Grace Oladimeji, said the activities lined up by the state government to mark the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day would start on Friday, January 8, 2016, and end in January 15, 2016.
The Chairman of the Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Legion, Col. Samuel Akanbi (Retd.), commended Ambode, saying the touch of his administration had been felt in every part of Lagos.
He, however, urged the government to look into their plights and also consider engaging members of the Legion in the security plans of the state.
