IGP vows to crush criminals■ Obiano donates out 25 special security vehicles to police

It was jubilation yesterday in Anambra State especially for the Nigeria Police as Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano handed over 25 American-style, highly equipped patrol cars to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase for the use of the police in the state.
The vehicles which are Toyota Corolla have Alcohol detecting kits and other special kits including speed guns to track over speeding vehicles and were meant to aid crime detection and prevention in Anambra State.
Addressing the large crowd at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, the overwhelmed police boss, Arase assured the people that police would not fail the people of Anambra and the governor for the gesture.
The IGP noted that Governor Obiano had shown the light for others to follow in the South East, stating that police were ready to crush the criminals in the country through community policing and commended Anambra State government for providing the equipment for the warfare.
Arase, who also addressed police officers at the State Command Headquarters in Amawbia, charged them to show professionalism in the cause of their duty.
Earlier in his address, Governor Obiano said the introduction of speed guns to track over speeding vehicles and the use of the alcohol detecting device, represent a bold attempt to proffer answers to the many questions in the country, as far as criminal activities were concerned.
His address reads in part, “My administration is determined to ensure that no Nigerian who finds his or herself within the geographical space of Anambra State shall run the risk of avoidable death from over-speeding vehicles or a drunk-driver.
“I have no doubt in my mind that with a committed use of the speed guns and the alcohol detecting devices, we shall save ourselves the agony of avoidable death from auto accidents.
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and other agencies involved in ensuring safety on our roads and highways are fully briefed on this and prepared to apply the necessary checks going forward.
“We shall continue to innovate and proffer new solutions for our old challenges. Ndi Anambra, when I look back at how far we have come in our pursuit of a free and prosperous state, I can’t help but nod with contentment.
“When I realise that we have brought violent robberies and high profile kidnappings to the lowest ebb, I simply give thanks to God for finding me a worthy instrument to make a difference in the lives of his children.”
