Oscar Pistorius hopes for early freedom has been punctured after The Supreme Court of Appeal in South Africa on Thursday overturned his culpable homicide conviction for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, to murder.
Justice Eric Leach on Thursday upgraded the conviction of the six-time Paralympic champion to murder after detailing the case and the reasons he cannot accept Pistorius’s earlier version of events.
A murder conviction carries a much heftier sentence: a minimum of 15 years in jail in South Africa.
Before today’s nailing, Pistorius spent barely 12 months behind bars in Pretoria before being transferred to house arrest at his uncle’s luxury home.
The development sparked outrage which culminated in prosecutors lodging an appeal to the court against the original conviction.
