TRAGEDY struck on Tuesday, when eight students and a driver died in a motor accident along Iroko road, via Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The students and their coordinators were returning to Kano from Lagos after a quiz competition, when they met their untimely death.
Daily Sun gathered that the Imam in charge of Government House mosques, Alhaji Haruna Mohammed broke the news during Ishai prayers urging the believers to pray for the souls of the deceased.
The deceased were said to had been deposited at a mortuary in Ibadan.
A source told Daily Sun that the state government was making arrangement to convey the dead back to Kano with the Nigerian Air force, Airbus for burial.
Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has condoled with his Kano State counterpart, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, following the death of the eight students of the state origin in an accident along Iroko road, via Ibadan.
The accident was said to have occurred, on Tuesday, while 16 students and their teachers were returning to Kano after representing the state in a quiz competition in Lagos.
Seven of the students were said to have died on the spot, while one out of the nine rescued from the scene, died few hours after arriving at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
The governor described the incident, which also reportedly claimed the life of the driver of the bus conveying the students, as highly depressing to him and the people of the state.
Ajimobi had visited the eight surviving victims of the accident at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the UCH, where he offered to pick their bills until they were discharged from the hospital.
Ajimobi said: “This is most unfortunate and de- pressing to me and the good people of Oyo State. My heartfelt sympathy goes to the governor of Kano State, parents and the loved ones of the dead students and other victims. May their gentle souls rest in perfect peace.
“They are children and we all have children. So, we have to come and empathise with them. I want to use this opportunity to announce that we will settle the bills and take adequate care of the surviving ones.”
