NO fewer than 12 people died in three different auto crashes which occurred yesterday in Imo State, Enugu State and in Ogun state where a 3-day-old baby was among lucky survivors in a ghastly motor accident that claimed the lives of the infant’s father and one other passenger.
The Ogun accident, Sunday Sun gathered, was a multiple crash along the Abeokuta-Siun Expressway.
The accident, which occurred around 3: 45pm in front of the Police ICT College located few metres away from Kobape village, it was gathered, involved three cars and a Toyota Carina taxi cab marked (Ogun) ABG 810 XA.
The three other cars involved included a Toyota Siena car with registration number APC 929 HU; a Nissan Pathfinder Jeep with registration number (LAGOS) KJA 311 CW and an unregistered Toyota Corolla “Tokunbo” car.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the multiple auto crash.
Akinbiyi attributed the cause of the accident to over-speeding on the part of the driver of the Toyota Siena car.
He said the two victims, one of whom was the father of the 3-day-old baby, died on the spot, while several other commuters sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash.
The TRACE spokesman however added that while the 3-day old baby was rescued alive, the baby’s mother sustained broken legs.
Similarly in Imo, a family of six perished in a ghastly road accident, near Agbala community along the Owerri/ Aba expressway, when a luxury bus rammed into the Toyota Sienna wagon they were travelling in.
This was just as angry mob set ablaze the luxury bus said to have been responsible for the accident
According to an eyewitness’ account, the yet to be identified deceased family were coming from the Owerri end of the expressway while the luxury bus which was coming from the Aba end was on top speed while overtaking, and in its bid to evade a Mack truck, rammed into the Toyota which had already cleared off the road, killing the occupants on the spot.
He further disclosed that sympathisers rushed to the scene to rescue the occupants, which included a newborn baby, but that they were all dead and had to be dragged out from the wreckage of the vehicle.
It was the same tragic story in Enugu where four persons, including a little girl, were confirmed dead in an auto crash that occurred in the early hours of the day at Abia along 9th Mile/ Udi/Oji River Road in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to the Enugu Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, a DSP, the auto crash occurred when a water tanker lorry with registration number ENU 211 XY collided with a Galaxy Sharon mini-bus with registration number LFA 375 XA coming from the opposite direction.
Those who were injured in the crash, he said, were rushed to both Our Saviour Hospital 9th Mile Corner Ngwo and Victoria Hospital Udi by a combined team of traffic policemen, operatives of the FRSC and public spirited individuals for medical attention while the deceased were deposited in the mortuary.
Amaraizu, however, said that the cause of the accident was not yet known, but investigations have commenced in full scale.
