The Sports for Development and Peace Network, Nigeria on Wednesday, 6th of April donated soccer balls to the Lagos state correction al home along Kudirat Abiola Road, Oj ota to mark this year’s United Nations World International day for sports development and peace.
According to the Femi Abioye, National Coordinator of the Sports for Development and Peace Network in Nigeria, the day has been specially dedicated for advocacy and a platform for organisations in social enterprise or NG Os to raise awareness about the opportunities available in sports to promote social development and other positive causes.
In the same vein, some sets of balls were donated to Lagos state para-soccer Association which was received by the Chairperson of the body, Nkechi Obi and the homeless world cup representative in Nigeria received by Yomi Kuku.
Speaking after the presentation of the sporting equipment supplied by Rudder sports Management, Abioye revealed that their organisation decided to mark the 3rd year in the series with the theme, Children Under Care and Support: Their Rights to Play and Sports as to raise awareness over the right of every child to have access to adequate physical exercise to aid their all-round development.
“Because of various factors, these rights are being infringed on, so basically for this year’s celebration, we brought to fore these fundamental issues and as a way of making it an advocacy thing, we donated balls to the Lagos state Ministry of Youth and Social Development under which the children under care and supervision comes under.”
According to him, the donated equipment will help the kids to express their God-given talents which is the core area of the message being preached by the United Nation and SDEVPEN.
In his conclusion, Abioye revealed their goal is, “To see some of them being able to participate in the FIFA organised Homeless World cup and some other initiatives geared at encouraging them to be what they are in the near future.”
