A group, Young Professionals Alliance For Change, has decried the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) approach to government’s anti-graft war, accusing the agency of arresting suspects before conducting investigations.
In a statement signed by its secretary general, Chukwudi Ifediora, the group said the EFCC has been operating in reverse order and prosecuting the fight against corruption in the wrong way.
Ifediora said though the group supports President Buhari administration’s fight against corruption, it condemns the ‘unguarded desperation’ of the EFCC to carry out the mandate.
“This is not how to fight corruption. Such approach is not only absurd and unacceptable; it is at variance to the EFCC Act, and of course, the 1999 Constitution (as amended),” he said.
“An immediate example of this illegal behaviour is the arrest last week of Mrs Esther Ogbue-Nnamdi, the former managing director of the Petroleum Products Pricing and Marketing Company (PPMC), and currently the managing director of NNPC Retail Limited, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
