THE new video purportedly released by Boko Haram is an indication of a sharp split between the moderate elements and extremists among the insurgents, some residents said.
In the new video suspected to have been released by Boko Haram on Friday, the group insisted it was neither ready to surrender nor retreated from its violent campaigns, a sharp shift from last week’s video where the sect leader, Abubakar Shekau, announced possible end to the insurgents’ activities.
The usually fiery Shekau in the video released last week in a rare message, looked dejected and frail, predicting the group may be riding to its extinction. The Nigerian military in its reaction to the video, urged remaining Boko Haram men to surrender. But barely two weeks after, the insurgents released another video, this time around, maintaining it would not give up its violent struggle.
“You should know that there is no truce, there is no negotiation, there is no surrender,” an unnamed man in camouflage declared in Hausa in a prepared script he read in the video posted on Youtube.
“This war between us will not stop,” the man who posed with some fighters carrying assault rifles in front of Toyota Hilux pick-up, said.
Spokesman of the government-backed youth vigilance group, Civilian JTF, Bar Jubrin Gunda said Boko Haram was a “divided and decimated group struggling for relevance.”
“Boko Haram is sharply divided and that’s why they are releasing video suggesting two divided positions. They can no longer be united because they have been weakened. In fact, they don’t have a central command structure as it used to be. Their end is in sight and they will be completely flushed out,” he said.
A very reliable military source told Sunday Sun that the military authority was already reviewing the video. “Our commanders are already reviewing the video to ascertain whether Boko Haram actually posted it on Youtube and the detail,” the source said.
