Biafra: Plot to kill Nnamdi Kanu will backfire, IPOB leaders warn

LEADERS of the pro-Biafra group, The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have warned that the alleged plot by the presidency and four governors from the South-East geopolitical zone to kill Mr. Nnamdi Kanu will backfire. Kanu has been in detention since October 2015 over alleged treasonable felony.
Speaking to Saturday Sun, the spokespersons of IPOB, Emma Mmezu and Dr. Clifford Iroanya alleged that the governors were in Abuja last week where they discussed ways to eliminate Kanu in order to silent the struggle for an independent state of Biafra.
“We received security report that plans have been concluded to assassinate the leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The assassination plot was agreed upon at a meeting held on Saturday, March 26, 2016 in Abuja.
“These four states, whose governors are allegedly neck-deep in the plot are the states where genocide is allegedly being committed on Biafrans continually and with the open support and acquiescence of the governors.” But why are the governors, in collusion with the powers that be and Daura, the Department of State Security, DSS boss, hell-bent on assassinating Kanu?
“We were reliably informed that the attendees at the meeting resolved that murdering Nnamdi Kanu is the only way to stop the Biafra restoration process. The group further reasoned that since Nnamdi Kanu commands a large followership of Biafrans in their millions and these Biafrans are focused and determined to achieve the restoration of the nation of Biafra, killing Nnamdi Kanu will discourage and disorganize these dedicated disciples and put the entire restoration process in jeopardy” they alleged.
They further stated that “These people who are disguising themselves as politicians, believe that with the elimination of Nnamdi Kanu, the march towards the restoration of the nation of Biafra will come to an abrupt end. They also came up with two options on how to go about the assassination plot.
“The first option is to hire some people who will camouflage as IPOB members and fake a hijack of the vehicle that will be taking Nnamdi Kanu to court. In the process, the grop alleged, operatives of Department of State Services (DSS) will kill Nnamdi Kanu and claim that he died in a crossfire during the purported hijack. The second option is to kill Kanu by poisoning his food, just like it was done to M.K.O. Abiola.
“We are therefore, using this opportunity to alert the world that Nnamdi Kanu is now marked for death. These men have collectively agreed to assassinate him and they have vowed that nothing will stop them from carrying out the plans. Let it not come as a surprise to anyone reading when you hear any moment from now, that Nnamdi Kanu has been killed”
On the steps being taken by IPOB to ensure the protection of Kanu if the allegations turn out to be true, they said: “We have advised Kanu to reject every food including those brought by close family members because the DSS always scrutinise his food before allowing it in, as they might have added poison to the food.
He should not mix with other prisoners because we are aware that Interior ministry officials working through the Prison Service have planted their agents pretending to be prisoners to spy and give reports on him to the DSS.
“We have eyes everywhere, so we get regular reports on his health status. Nigeria is aware of the consequences, should anything happen to our leader because in every family in Biafra, are hardcore IPOB members. Many people are willing to die for Kanu, so Buhari should tread carefully”.
The spokespersons, while speaking on the refusal of bail for Kanu, said, “the bail refusal is not a problem for us because IPOB wants the trial to go ahead so that we can expose and disgrace a corrupt judicial system hamstrung by the whims of a dictator.
“The judge was hired to do a hatchet job but he never reckoned that we will be this tenacious. As long as they want to go by the rule in this trial, we welcome it but any silly game will be resisted. It is obvious that Buhari’s government has no case against our leader hence we continue to call for his release rather than his vindictive detention”.
On the resumption of the suspended protest over the continued detention of Kanu, the group said that “Our resumption of protest is imminent but for understandable reasons, we can’t give you details yet. We are putting in place our TV technology so that the whole world will watch it live online and gain first hand knowledge of the brutality of the Nigerian Army.
“We are IPOB and we do things in a unique way. Our next outing will shake the whole earth. The worst mistake this government made was to arrest our leader and they are beginning to discover how formidable we are. Death to us is nothing, freedom for Biafra is everything.”
They however, stated that the reason the elites in Igboland were not supporting the struggle and the prosecution of Kanu was that they are not trustworthy.
“IPOB members do not expect our elites or leaders to support us openly because not all of them are trustworthy. IPOB worldwide decided to be doing and piloting this struggle without them for this particular time, till the appointed time”, they stated.
Speaking in the same vein, Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor said that the IPOB leader is being persecuted but not prosecuted by the Federal Government since he did not commit any crime.
He said that Kanu has always been in high spirit despite the fact that he is being persecuted, saying that his strong resolve remained that Kanu would only be tried based on extant laws as well as available evidence before the court and not on false information being peddled by his alleged persecutors.
Ejiofor who spoke with Saturday Sun noted that there is noting like freedom which everyone deserves and desires to enjoy, adding that prison custody is no good place to be but that victory will be achieved at the end of it all.
According to him, “it is very heartbreaking when it is remembered that Kanu is being subjected to this most inhuman treatment for offences he never committed. However, we are very much convinced that Justice shall triumph at last, Kanu represents the truth, light and whatever justice connotes”.
On the alleged plot to assassinate Kanu, Ejiofor said: “there must be an atom of truth in every allegation. On our preliminary findings, we have decided to dig the more to unravel the truth. We shall make our position known to the public in due course. But let the allegation on assassination attempt be treated with every sense of seriousness. It can’t be undermined or swept under the carpet. Though the international community has officially been alerted on some suspicious foul play in the trial”.
While speaking on the proceedings of the case so far, the counsel noted that he has filed application for stay of proceeding at the Federal High Court while the case will come up on April 5, 2016 for hearing.
“Although the Federal Government has filed a counter which was responded to very promptly by our legal team. The full argument will be taken on April 5. Also, our Appeal against the ruling of the Federal High Court denying Kanu and others bail will also be coming up on April 25, 2016 for hearing. The briefs have been exchanged by the parties, so that the stage is now set for legal argument on April 25”
