Ooni, Afenifere urge unity among Yoruba

THE Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, yesterday urged all Yoruba across the country to always put the interest of the race above personal and political consideration.
The monarch spoke yesterday in his palace when the leadership of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, led by its chairman, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, paid him a courtesy visit.
Ooni Ogunwusi urged all Yoruba who hold grudges against their kinsmen on account of political affiliation to resolve their differences and find a common ground to strategise on how to restore the past glory of the race.
He said they should not allow politics cause hatred, jealousy and acrimony but strive at all times to accommodate one another irrespective of political differences.
He tasked the leadership of Afenifere to give priority to the progress of Yoruba nation, urging members to be prepared to forgive their kinsmen who might have offended them either on account of principle or political consideration.
In his address, Chief Fasoranti assured the monarch of the group’s readiness to support any course that can promote unity in Yoruba land.
Fasoranti, whose speech was entitled, “A gift to the Yoruba race,” lauded the Ooni, describing his recent visit to other monarchs as a challenge to the group.
The Afenifere chief said: “In the last few weeks, you have stepped out of your throne to pay epoch-making visits to your brother Obas and in the process put an end to historical animosities, age-long rivalries, petty disputes and perennial conflicts.
“Be rest assured of the cooperation of Afenifere in your royal request to forge a new spirit of understanding especially at this period when the Yoruba nation appears seriously endangered.”
