BBOG Group Calls For Prosecution Of Abductors Of Ese, Ikorodu Schoolgirls
The BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) group has called for the prosecution of abductors and all those involved in the abduction of Ese Oruru and three schoolgirls of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos.
In a press release signed by its leaders, Aisha Yesufu, Dr Oby Ezekwesili and Hadiza Bala Usman, the group also stated that dealing with the culprit will serve as a deterrant for others who might want to commit such crime.
In the statement tagged, ‘Girls education under attack: The time for decisive action is now,’ the group expressed sadness over the handling of the Miss Ese Oruru’s abduction matter, especially by some sections of the media who it said exposed her face without blanking any parts of it to protect her, while deliberately or not, shielding the face of the ‘villain who abducted.’
It also condemned the sloppiness and unprofessionalism of the police who were notified and aware that the young girl was taken away from her parents since August 2015, but did nothing about it up to February 2016.
“Some sections of the media also promoted falsehoods about this unfortunate incidence, making it difficult at first to ascertain the truth about the unfortunate incident. This we condemn.
“The police on their part were notified and aware that this young girl who should be in school was taken away from her home, parents, and family without their consent since August 2015, but did nothing about it up to February 2016. This sloppiness and unprofessionalism we condemn in the strongest terms. Those within the force found to have been part of this shameful conduct must be identified and punished accordingly. Our police must be made to be more responsive. The lives of citizens must be dignified, and welfare prioritised at all times,” it said.
It called on all Nigerians to together fight and conquer the menace of child abduction that threatens the nation while urging it to protect the right to education especially of the young ones.
“This child may now be back with her parents, but the matter is not yet over. The handling of this matter and logical closure on it would determine how the matter of our #ChibokGirls would be handled when they return. We therefore urge all to be engaged in it.
“The abductors and all those involved in the abduction must be identified and punished. Likewise all those involved in keeping her captive while she was away.’’’
