AS the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) released the timetable for this year’s governorship election in Ondo State, the call by the old Akure Division of the state to produce the next governor got more strident at the weekend with prominent citizens of the state capital, led by their monarch, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, the Deji of Akure, calling for its actualization.
The monarch who spoke at a dinner hosted in honour of prominent sons of the community who were recently conferred with the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) appealed to his subjects to view the matter with “all the seriousness it deserves.”
The dinner was hosted by another prominent indigene of the community, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe, a Port-Harcourt-based Senior Advocate who used the occasion to commission the state-of-the-art event centre venue and harped on the need for unity among politicians to bring the needed development to the metropolis.
Those honored at the event included Olatunde Oluranti Adejuyigbe, Adeniyi Ayodele Adegbonmire and Dr. Oladapo Olanipekun.
Oba Aladetoyinbo expressed dismay that despite the position of Akure as the state capital and the impressive arrays of quality politicians from the community, it has not occupied the top seat since the creation of the state in 1976.

According to the monarch, “all the old divisions have one time or the other, produced the occupant of the governorship seat, except Akure where the seat is physically located. This is not acceptable to us and the time to correct the anomaly is now.”
Addressing a rich gathering of personalities that included the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Olasehinde Kumuyi, the President of the customary Court of Appeal, Justice Folasade Aguda-Taiwo and other members of the bar and bench as well as political and community leaders, Adedipe said he organised the dinner to celebrate the industry and commitment of the honorees to the legal profession.
