Lawmakers under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State yesterday said they regret the harsh, deplorable and despicable economic condition faced by workers in the state.
The lawmakers under the aegis of the PDP caucus in Imo State House of Assembly, in a statement exclusively obtained by Daily Sunsaid they were speaking out based on the planned industrial action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and workers in the state over their plight.
Few weeks ago, the state government suspended over 3,000 workers in 19 parastatals and did concessioning of some medical facilities in the state, which pitted the workers against Governor Rochas Okorocha.
Minority leader, Obinna Egu , Bruno Ukoha, Ken Agbim, Emma Orie, and Mike Iheanetu, signed a statement, which backed the NLC’s planned industrial action on the matter.
“The PDP caucus in Imo Assembly shares the plight of Imo workers and the effects of the proposed industrial action by workers in the state.
“As legislators, we uphold the sanctity of work and wage relationship as much as we accept the principles of freedom of expression by individuals and associations within the confines of established laws and norms.
“Much as we appreciate the present economic realities in the country, we regret, in unmistaken terms, the harsh, deplorable and despicable economic situation in Imo State presently.”
They said the proposed strike by Imo workers calls for urgent and serious attention by all well-meaning citizens of the state and called on the leadership and members of organised labour in the state to deploy all necessary negotiating tools and consultations towards resolving all industrial -related disputes in the state. The lawmakers warned that “on no condition should the rights of a people be taken for granted anymore.”
