Editor, Nation’s Capital of The Sun, Ikenna Emewu has been nominated as the Nigerian candidate for the 2016 China Public Diplomacy Association Fellowship (CPDAF).
The prestigious international journalism fellowship, meant to foster Africa/China media exchange and experience, is to hold in Beijing, China starting from the end of this month till the middle of December 2016.
The offer letter of January 29, from the association, through the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, indicated that Emewu was selected from among others after consideration of his work and brief.
As part of The Sun’s support for Emewu to attend the fellowship, the management has appointed him the Beijing Bureau Chief for the period of the course.
While announcing this, Managing Director of The Sun Publishing Limited, Mr. Eric Osagie said the fellowship is a good development and a sign of the high recognition readers, including the outer world, have for newspaper.
Osagie encouraged the awardee to make the best use of the fellowship as encouragement to the organisation not to relent in its resolve to give backing to workers to get the best local and international exposure in their various fields.
The award letter also indicated that Emewu’s selection for the fellowship also has to do with the prominence, dominance and importance of the role of The Sun Newspaper in Nigeria, especially in projecting and encouraging a virile diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and China.
The fellowship, according to CPDA, was formally initiated in 2014 after the fifth Ministerial Conference of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation aimed at promoting media exchange and strengthening friendly cooperation between China and Africa.
The fellowship takes 10 editors from African countries, with not more than one from a country. The fellowship holds as partnership between the CPDA and the Renmin University of China.
Emewu would be attending the fellowship alongside nine other media professionals from other African countries.
He joined The Sun Newspaper in May 2003 as Assistant News Editor and has gone through the ranks to his current position as head of the Abuja office of the organisation.
Emewu, a First Class graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, also has a Masters degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos, a Fellow of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) of the Kookmin University, Seoul and member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE)
He is the first in Nigerian print media to be nominated for the CPDA Fellowship.
