Rivers APC, PDP bicker over alleged plot to kill party chieftains

Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm that plans are afoot to kill some top members of the party.
Consequently, the party has sent a Save Our Soul (SOS) message to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, for protection.
A statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by the state Chairman of the party, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, alleged that there is a plot by the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to embark on killing of some selected leaders of the party.
“Credible information available to us indicates that the ruling party in the state is planning to eliminate APC leaders before the rerun elections into the national and state assemblies so as to make the coast easy for PDP during the said rerun elections.”
Ikanya alleged that PDP members in the state   interpreted the Supreme Court judgment to mean, killing and installing their members into the Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly.
He declared: “This misrepresentation of the Supreme Court judgment, by the PDP henchmen in Rivers State, is not only sad but also very unfortunate. We, therefore, plead with Arase to come to our aid, as a matter of urgency, by deploying enough members of his men, to save us from the hands of these misguided, demented fellows who feel leadership can be obtained only through the shedding of the blood of innocent souls.”
Reacting to the allegation, Rivers PDP called on the IGP to investigate Ikanya’s allegation.
Speaking through his media aide, Mr. Jerry Needam, state chairman of PDP, Chief Felix Obuah, said the allegation was weighty and involved human lives, and urged the IGP to summon Ikanya for questioning.
Describing the allegation as completely false, Obuah said the aimed was to create the impression that there is tension in the state, with a view to using “federal might” to militarise the state, to the advantage of APC.
“We call on Arase to investigate Ikanya. PDP will take part in the election and the party will come tops.”
In a related development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fixed a new date for the national and House of Assembly rerun elections in Rivers State.
INEC said in a statement on Tuesday evening, in Port Harcourt, that the elections would now hold on March 19.
The commission had earlier scheduled February 6 for the rerun polls.
The statement further said the new date was taken at a stakeholders’ meeting on February 1, with the commission.
