Fulani herdsmen

The frequent friction between Fulani herdsmen and many communities in Delta State has attracted the attention of the Delta State Police Command as the police brokered a peace meeting between the herdsmen and their host communities in Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.
The police at the town hall meeting harped on the need for the hosts and herdsmen to live peacefully together and avoid situations capable of threatening peace and security in the locality through avoidable crises.
The state commissioner of Police, Mr. Baba Usman Alkali, was represented at the meeting held at Oghara, Ethiope West headquarters by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge operations (DC Ops), Mr. Undie Adie.
It attracted the local government chairman, traditional rulers, community leaders, Fulani representatives and heads of security agencies in the area, while the issue of constant destruction of crops in farms in the area by Fulani cattle was discussed.
Among resolutions reached at the meeting were "That although the Fulanis are not asked to leave the area, they must not graze their cattle on farmlands" and "The Fulanis should not invite their colleagues from other places to come and wage war on their host communities."
Furthermore, "Fulanis resident in the area should help in checkmating the activities of itinerant cattle rearers who are claimed to be responsible for destruction of crops and raping of women (while) "Issues on security threat should always be promptly reported to security agencies instead of resorting to self-help."
