VICE President Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, hosted top leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to a crucial meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting, which was the first of its kind, took place just as President Muhammadu Buhari is away in Saudi Arabia on an official trip.
The meeting, which lasted about four hours, started at about 11:00am and ended at about 2.40pm.
Those in attendance included Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun; Senate Leader Ali Ndume; National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; former vice president Atiku Abubakar, a leader of the party; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; and a former interim chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande.
Others were the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Segun Oni; Chief Tony Momoh; Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu; Imo State Deputy Governor, Eze Madubere; and Special Adviser to the Vice President on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu.
Saraki arrived at about 12.30pm when the meeting was already underway.
Thereafter, the attendees refused to talk to State House correspondents.
Ojudu told reporters that participants would not grant interviews but promised that the Office of the Vice President would issue a statement later.
“The meeting was just a meeting of party chiefs. It does not require that we should have an elaborate discussion with you.
“So, you should allow them to go freely on their own without being asked to come and grant interviews.
“But, the Office of the Vice President will issue a short statement on the meeting later.
“What we are saying is that it was just a consultative meeting of selected party leaders on party matters and other issues.”
On whether the meeting was meant to address the crisis of confidence among some party leaders, Ojudu said, “no, nothing like that.”
Osinbajo’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande subsequently issued a two-paragraph on the meeting.
“Select leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, drawn from the party’s national headquarters, the legislative and executive arms of government, had a consultative meeting on issues affecting the party and the nation.
“The meeting, which held at the vice president’s conference room, was very useful and resourceful towards achieving the goals of the party and the government.”
