Organised labour in Imo State made good its threat when it paralysed economic activities in Owerri, Imo State on Wednesday to protest sack of over 3,000 workers by Governor Rochas Okorocha last month.
It took the intervention of party leaders and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) before angry workers could back down.
Daily Sun learnt that APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, led party leaders to Imo on Tuesday to prevail on the governor.
Sources said Oyegun’s seven man delegation flew in from Abuja and prevailed upon Okorocha against having confrontation with organised labour.
The intervention worked and the governor signed an agreement to recall the sacked workers as well as put in place payment of their backlog of salary.
He also suspended the concessioning of the managment of the parastatals
NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, in his address, noted that the labour leadership decided to return to the state for ‘Operation Occupy Imo’ as they could no longer condone the ongoing maltreatment and torture of workers in the state.
On his part, the TUC President, Bobboi Bala Kaigama condemned what he considered the arbitrariness of the governor in the use of the armed police and militia against law-abiding workers, describing it as unlawful, immoral and betrayal of the principles of democracy.
