Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has said former Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Smart Adeyemi will not leave for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Messrs Idris Mola Imran and I.O Obanishe, chairman and secretary of the PDP in Ijumu Local Government Area of the state, who spoke on behalf of the party in a statement in Abuja said the former Senator remains a strong pillar of the party.
In the statement jointly signed by the duo, the party claimed that Senator Adeyemi remains a core leader of Kogi West senatorial district even though some of his supporters have left the party in anger to the APC.
The PDP chiefs said Adeyemi has invested far more than any chieftain of the party in the welfare of the people including scholarships to students and social infrastructure development.
“He (Adeyemi) cannot and will not leave this investment and all of his supporters behind to join the APC for no reason because he is noted for peace, progress and development,” the PDP chiefs said.
But, Coordinator of Senator Smart Adeyemi Campaign Organisation Hon. Fehinti Dada, said in a telephone interview that the former senator will soon announce his position to the people. Meanwhile, Kogi-based legal practitioner, Barrister Onoja Alaji has faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for barring some political parties and their candidates from participating in the February 20 rerun election in the state.
Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mallam Haliru Pai, last week, announced the rerun election in 1,988 polling units in 14 local government areas, but said that a court judgment excluded the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its candidates from contesting the rerun.
The REC specifically said that the APC will not participate in the rerun election into Okene/Ogoromagongo Federal Constituency as a result of the court ruling, adding that only the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was eligible.
On the state assembly re-run, the REC said APC and its candidates will not also participate in the Ofu and Ankpa 1 rerun, but that the party will participate in the Idah, Dekina/Biraidu and Okura re-run.
But reacting to this decision, Adaji who claimed to have participated in the election petition of some of the candidates purported to be excluded by INEC, said that nowhere did the court exclude any political party or their candidates from participating.
