Senator Bala Mohammed has said that the McLaren Luxury car impounded by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Federal Operations Unit, Zone A Ikeja last Friday was bought in Dubai for 140,000 dirham and not $3million dollars.
According to the Special Assistant to the former Minister, Eric Anyamene, Abdullahi Mohammed was never arrested or granted bail contrary to claims by Customs sources. The spokesman of FOU Zone A, Uche Ejesieme, had told journalists that the vehicle was impounded because a little above N300,000 was paid as duty instead of N124 million.
Anyamene stated further: “The truth is that the car in question was bought in Dubai for purely commercial purposes in July 2015 for the sum of 140,000 dirham and not $3 million as alleged in the story.
“It was shipped out of Dubai in December 2015 and got to Nigeria on January 8, 2016. Issues arising from the exact tariff on the car were resolved and the importer asked to pay the correct duty by Monday February 1, 2016 when the BN (duty due) would have been generated. Contrary to the claim in the story, Abdullahi was never arrested. Rather, he got to know about the controversy from the clearing agent”, he said in a statement. i
