The remark made by President Muhammadu Buhari, blaming some Nigerians for denting the nation’s image abroad, yesterday caused a Twitter stir when Senator Ben Murray-Bruce and Transportation Minister, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, went for one another’s jugular.
Known as the ‘Commonsense’ senator, Murray-Bruce in a series of tweets yesterday flayed the president for portraying the country in a bad light, thus scaring away prospective foreign investors.
Backed by some supporters, some aggrieved Nigerians also took to Twitter using the hashtag #IAmANigerianNotACriminal, to register their displeasure over the president’s remark.
Among the aggrieved responses was from the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who wrote: “If people that are around the president are criminals. We are not criminals. #NigeriansAreNotCriminals.”
However, the most prominent tweet from Murray-Bruce that set off the twitter war read: “President @MBuhari, Nigerians are not criminals. Nigerians are honest hardworking people. #IAmANigerianNotACriminal. Retweet if you agree.”
Reacting to the tweet, popular social media entrepreneur Japheth Omojuwa wrote: “The reason I will never take people like Ben Bruce serious is because when they saw a leader (GEJ) do wrong, they kept quiet. Don’t be Bruce.”
Responding to Omojuwa’s tweet, the senator however made a veiled reference to Amaechi who allegedly spent N82 million when he held a dinner for Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka.
In his reply to Omojuwa, Murray-Bruce said: “You have left Trump to face me? Wake me up the day people start dying because you refused to take them seriously.
“Your own minister spent N80 million on a one day dinner, yet it is your citizens you accuse of being criminals. #IAmANigerianNotACriminal.”
On seeing Murray-Bruce’s unconcealed reference to him, Amaechi jumped into the fray, writing: “A coward who is not bold enough to name the minister that he alleged criminally spent N80m on dinner is unfit to sit in our Senate chambers.
“I will not respond to innuendos. Be courageous, name the minister. We know you talk here and do ‘siddon’ look where you are elected to talk.”
Expectedly, the twitter fight pitted the supporters of both camps against each other, with unsubstantiated accusations thrown about at will.
