BornO State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has said incessant terrorists attacks in various parts of the state have brought it to ground zero in the area of infrastructure.
Speaking yesterday when a delegation from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) visited him at the Government House, Maiduguri to donate relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state, Governor Shettima said he does not like quantifying the losses recorded since the insurgency began in the state.
He thanked the NPA management for the donation and described it as timely.
“Let me express our heart-felt gratitude for the kind gesture meant to address the challenges we’re facing as a result of the insurgency. We also want to thank President Buhari for his support and other promises. It is heartwarming and it really gives us hope to cope. We, the people of Borno, are grateful. We have hope this madness will be over soonest. We’re now at the tail end of crisis. These lunatics have resorted to teenage girls as suicide bombers. They want to kill as many people as possible to generate the publicity they crave for. That’s a sign of weakness not strength.
Today, no territory in Borno State is under their control. Security forces have made tremendous sacrifices and we’re cooperating with them. This madness will be over soon”, he stated. Shettima noted that 70-80 percent of IDPs camps are in Borno State, urging well-meaning Nigerians to assist the states affected by the insurgency.
On what the state has spent in war against insurgents, the Governor said; “I don’t like to talk about figures. We’ve lost so many lives and one life lost means a lot to us. However, we’ve spent billions of naira but we know we’ll soon come out if”, he added.
Also speaking at the visit, the General Manager, Human Resources of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Yahaya Bukar, said the Authority would do more to help the people of Bornu and other states ravaged by terrorists attacks.
Bukar, who is also the Chairman of NPA committee on IDPs, said the war has left thousands dead, maimed and displaced, urging good spirited Nigerians to support affected states.
“The NPA MD, Mallam Habib Abdullahi and the entire management team are alarmed at the spate of bombings which have led to the wanton destruction of lives and properties. So management wants to contribute it’s own quota to help and that is why the NPA Committee on IDPs was set up. We came with various relief materials. The items are 100 bags of millet, 100 bags of beans, 300 nylon mats, 10 bales of blanket and 150 mattresses. We’re touched by the plights of the victims of insurgency. We’re also aware of your challenges as a Governor of this troubled state. We’re, however, impressed on how you’ve handled the issues. We’re impressed at the rapid reconstruction going on. We’ve seen solar-powered streetlights, etc despite the insurgency. We wish you success in your urgent task of rebuilding the state. We urge all sister agencies in maritime and other well-meaning Nigerians to contribute their quota too. We pray for peace in Borno and Nigeria at large”, he stated.
