APC wants to subvert electoral process, Athan Achonu alleges
THE Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the botched Okigwe senatorial polls, Chief Athan Nneji Achonu has accused the leadership of the APC in the state of trying to subvert the electoral process by vehemently opposing the use of Card Reader for the re-run election.
This was even as he alleged that the leaders of APC and their supporters barricaded the Imo State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), when they realized that they had thumb-printed the wrong ballot papers, which they thought was to be used for the Okigwe senatorial re-run.
The PDP candidate who addressed newsmen yesterday at the party’s state secretariat in Owerri, the Imo State capital, said the APC led government in the state was trying to scuttle the Okigwe senatorial re-run polls by insisting that the Card Reader must not be used to enable them import mercenaries to vote on the election day.
Hear him: “The APC is trying to scuttle the electoral process in the state. They are now insisting that the Card Reader should not be used obviously to enable them to import mercenaries into Okigwe for the election. So, I want to let the world know that APC wants to subvert the electoral process in Imo state.
He said further: “The INEC told us on several occasions that it would use the card reader and they assured us that the card reader must be used and that even if it breaks down that the election will continue the next day and we are in support of the INEC position. But the APC will have none of that.
“The APC had already thumb-printed ballot papers the previous day in their desperate bid to win at all cost but when INEC showed the parties the ballot papers to be used which came from the CBN vault, they realized that their plans had failed. Their next line of action was to mobilize their members to go and block the office of INEC to prevent the election from holding. So, the INEC must produce new ballot papers and result sheets because the ones that were supposed to be had already been exposed.”
However, Achonu tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to use the Okigwe senatorial re-run election to show that he is indeed sincere about his claims of being a true democrat and promoter of the rule of law.
