5 die in Awka multiple auto crash, 24 Injured


Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Awka, Anambra State yesterday confirmed that five persons died in an accident, which occurred at Agu Awka on Monday night, which involved three long vehicles.
The commission also confirmed that 24 people sustained various degrees of injury.
FRSC state Commander, Mr. Sunday Ajayi, told newsmen in Awka that three people died on the spot in the accident, which took place at about 7 pm on Monday at Agu Awka along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway while another two died at the hospital.
The crash involved two trucks and 18-seater commuter bus in the state, close to Nnamdi Azikiwe University gate.
He said the commuter bus, a Hiace, with registration number, Anambra KPP 299 XA rammed into a Mercedes truck with registration number, WER 306XL, fully loaded with goods moving towards Enugu.
Ajayi said injured persons were taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Awka for medical attention.
He also said the condition of the injured persons, apart from the two, who died in the hospital, were stable.
He attributed the crash to reckless driving and impatience on the part of drivers.
