SEVEN people were yesterday confirmed dead when a 20-seater capacity boat capsized at Badore, in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The commercial boat, Sunday Sun gathered, was conveying 17 passengers and two crewmembers from Ijede in Ikorodu en route Badore when the accident happened.
The boat belonging to Aki Marine was reported to have capsized at a dredging point about 10.20 am yesterday.
Bodies of the dead passengers, were taken to Ikorodu General Hospital morgue where the survivors were equally taken to for treatment.
Officials of the Lagos State Water Ways Authority, Marine Police, National Inland Water Ways Authority, Emergency Response Team of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Lagos State Fire Service and the local divers helped in the rescue operation.
General Manager, LASEMA, Mr. Michael Akindele advised boat operators and passengers to observe basic safety measures such as the use of life jacket and regular checks of boat facilities before embarking on water transportation.
The latest boat accident happened nine days after a fatal boat collision also occurred at Ibeshe in Ikorodu axis of the state claiming the life of one passenger on board while several others were injured.
In the Ibeshe incident, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mrs. Abisola Kamson said the incident was caused by early morning mist, which led to poor visibility for the captains of the two boats.
The Marine Police, which assisted in the rescue effort, are currently carrying out an investigation into the latest incident.
