Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday called on the nation’s elite to be ready to work hard and contribute to nation building.
He said the elite must take the front seat in the nation’s efforts aimed at tackling political, economic and social challenges.
A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, quoted the Vice President as speaking while receiving the Save Democracy Group Africa at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Our country needs an elite consensus across party, religious and ethnic lines, to say we have a country to build, let us do so,” Osinbajo was quoted as saying.
The Vice President said coming together in a large country like Nigeria could be a task, however he urged the group to forge a common political understanding among the people.
He said the administration looked forward to concrete steps that would follow its forthcoming maiden summit to advance a democratic culture in the country and promised to convey the group’s requests for support in the summit to the President.
Akande quoted the Chairman of the National Political Summit Planning Committee and former Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Na’abba, as saying that the group was an effort to unite the political class and other stakeholders.
He said it was to build a platform to promote democracy, stabilise the polity and promote the enthronement of internal democracy in the nation’s political parties.
