NEMA donates items to A’Ibom flood victims


THE National Emergency Management Agency, South-South Zone, has distributed relief materials to victims of flood disaster in Uyo, Eket and some communities in Ibiono Ibom.
The relief items, which distribution was witnessed by the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Moses Ekpo, are rice, mattresses, vegetable oil, salt, cements, detergents, nails, beans, among others.
The victims suffered flood disaster, which swept through Uyo metropolis and Eket Local Government Area in 2015 from the month of May to August, and destroyed property.
The South-South Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr. Benjamin Oghenah, who represented the Director General of the agency, Muhammad Sani, said in Uyo on Thursday that indiscriminate erection of buildings on waterways as well as inadequate environmental sanitation by residents of Uyo metropolis led to the flooding.
He added that the flooding in Uyo metropolis was due to blocked channels. He noted that the channels provided for run-off collection had been silted.
He said, “Following the information we received from the state Emergency Management Agency on the disaster, a joint team of NEMA and SEMA officials carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas and a report was sent to the agency’s headquarters for further processing.
“In Eket LGA, we found out silting of the rivers and streams; some waterways have been sand-filled and built upon. Blockage of gutters also contributed to flooding,” he said.
Sani urged the Akwa Ibom State Government to take adequate measures to forestall recurrence of flooding in Uyo metropolis, Eket LGA, among others.
