A man and his daughter were critically injured after trying to pry open a metal object believed to be a hand held grenade with a hammer, the Borno State Police Command said on Tuesday.

The command, in a statement advising the residents to desist from tampering with strange objects, said: “On Friday, the 16th of January 2016, a staff of Federal Government College, Maiduguri, found an object reasonably believed to be a hand held grenade. While trying to pry it open with a hammer, the object exploded causing him and his daughter life threatening injuries.”

The statement signed by the public relations officer of the command, Victor Isuku, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said that another of such incidents occurred in Monguno, Borno State last year, when an explosive device led to the loss of lives as well as injuries to many innocent civilians.

Isuku said: “The Borno State Police Command wishes to draw the attention of the general public; particularly parents and guardians to warn their children to desist from tampering with strange objects as they may be explosive devices.”

The command also advised parents to educate their wards to avoid carrying any objects, packages or parcels from strangers who may entice them with sweets or promises of N20, as such parcels might turn out to be explosive devices or a ploy to kidnap them.

The command called on the public to always collaborate with the police in their effort to make Borno a crime-free state by giving useful information that would lead to the apprehension of criminals in the society.

In another incident, six Camerounian nationals who spent 213 days as captives of Boko Haram were flown to the capital, Yaounde, yesterday, reported Bloomberg.

The six men were presented to the governor of the Far North Region, Midjiyawa Bakari, on Monday after undergoing medical examinations at the Rapid Intervention Battalion healthcare unit in the regional capital, Maroua.

The businessmen, all from the country’s West Region, were abducted on June 11, 2015 while travelling to Maroua from Kousseri. They escaped after a raid by Camerounian and Nigerian forces on Boko Haram positions on January 5 and later rescued by soldiers, one of the hostages, Kouokam Mathurin, said in a phone interview.

The other freed businessmen are Ngatchoua Cedric, Njikang Idrissa, Pouamong Ousouman, Talla Charles and Dine Arnaud.
Thousands of people have been killed in neighbouring Nigeria as a campaign by Boko Haram militants to impose their version of Islamic law enters its seventh year. The violence has spilled over to Cameroun, Chad and Niger.
