Hoodlums attack ex-Bayelsa Speaker, LG chair, others

Hoodlums suspected to be political thugs have reportedly attacked former Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Boyelayefa Debekeme, in Ekeremor area of the state.
The former Speaker, who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, was allegedly attacked at the Governor’s Lodge in Ekeremor on Friday.
An unconfirmed report said the Chairman of Ekeremor Local Government Area, Mr. Billy Tobiye, PDP ward agent, Tams Alari, some members of the party, and the traditional ruler of Ekeremor, Agbodo Gbaseimo, were also reportedly attacked in the incident.
The incident, which occurred less than 24 hours to the state’s rescheduled poll in Southern Ijaw and 101 units in the state, has thrown the entire community into pandemonium.
The yet-to-be-identified hoodlums were reportedly unfazed by the presence of security operatives when they attacked Debekeme and other victims with machetes, wounding them in the process.
They were also said to have wielded dangerous weapons such as guns, axes, and cudgels among others during the attack.
Debekeme was said to have received deep machete cuts in his head and some other parts of his body, while Alari and Tobiye were reportedly beaten to a stupor by the suspected thugs.
It was learnt that a helpless policeman on duty was rescued by soldiers who recovered some weapons from the hoodlums. The recovered arms were said to be with the soldiers.
It was also learnt that some members of staff of the Governor’s Lodge ran for safety as the suspected thugs took over the entire community.
As of the time of filing this report, Debekeme was said to be receiving treatment at a hospital in Torugbene, while Alari and Tobiye were being attended to at an undisclosed hospital in Bomadi, Delta State.
