Fashola unveils 10-point agenda for power sector

Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola has unveiled a 10-point agenda aimed at reforming the nation’s power sector.
According to Fashola, the agenda include public engagement, especially around electricity tariffs; collection, payment and debts; and generation capacity and maintenance.
Others are ancillary services and dispatch order, procedure and discipline; gas requirements and constraints; 33KV load off-take and imbalances; location of excess and overload safety; quality service, new captive and embedded generation and franchising.
The minister unveiled the agenda at a meeting with key players, stakeholders and owners of generation and distribution companies as well as other players in the chain of electricity supply.
The meeting was called at the instance of the minister ahead of a monthly stakeholders’ meeting to be inaugurated in Abuja.
Fashola explained that the idea behind the monthly meeting was to listen to operators on various concerns in the industry and also to develop workable solutions for the Nigeria Electricity Supply Initiative (NESI).
The minister further said the meeting would be held in various states across the country.
He charged the power firms to appoint a person or people who can take decisions during or after the meeting to be their representatives.
He said: “We also want to have at least one representative of each major Disco, Genco or power player who can make decisions on behalf of his organisation. So, it will do us well to avoid sending representatives who cannot take decisions for their company.
“Our plan is that this meeting will hold every second Monday of the month. So, it is a fixed calendar, subject, of course, to any public holiday that falls on Monday and in such a case, we will move it to the next Monday automatically.”
He also noted that the meeting would democratise access in the power sector to Nigerians, adding that the gathering would allocate tasks, solve problems, as well as provide information management and analysis platform.
