MINISTER of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has said his home state of Ebonyi cannot afford to be in opposition when he charged the people to quickly embrace the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing an enlarged meeting of stakeholders/ leaders of the state chapter of APC, who gathered at his Uburu country home in Ohaozara Local Government at the weekend to brainstorm on the way forward for the party, Onu also said the state has tremendous potentials and must support the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to harness them.
The APC national leader expressed displeasure with the level of development in the country, especially his home state and has promised to do his best to ensure that more wealth and new jobs are created and the economy diversified.
The minister explained that President Buhari inherited a battered economy from the past administration and was working round the clock to fix it through diversification of the economy.
He also reiterated his ministry’s determination to drive the nation’s quest for a strong economy by adding value to the country’s agricultural produce and other abundant mineral resources.
“Nigeria has had a mono-product economy and because of that, whenever there is turbulence, we feel it so much.
“If our economy had been diversified over these years and there is a drop in the price of crude oil, our economy wouldn’t have been suffering as we are witnessing today.”
Continuing, he said: “This is where the Ministry of Science and Technology will play an important role; I will not sleep until the economy is diversified.”
He also debunked reports that his recent visit to Governor Dave Umahi was to mend fences with him.
Stating that he had no qualms with the governor, the minister said the visit was to console him over the death of his mother, Margret Umahi.
