A traditional ruler, the Okpala-Uku of Umusadege in Utagba-Uno, Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, Ogbu-Ewu Egbononwu Ojugbeli, has alerted the public of alleged threat to peace in his domain and ordered the postponement of the annual general meeting of the community.
The royal father has subsequently sought the assistance of security agents towards ensuring compliance with the cancellation of the meeting, scheduled to hold on Monday , which is regarded as an annual reunion among the people.
In an S.O.S. to the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, the Okpala-Uku said that the postponement of the Annual General Meeting had become inevitable in order to ensure peace and order in the community.
He also called on the state governor to intervene in warding off any acts of violence from any quarter in his domain.
According to him, "There is a plot to cause trouble in the community during the annual general meeting and I cannot fold my hands and allow such to happen. Our Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, should use his good offices to intervene; all security agencies, especially the police, should take note of this development. Crisis of any kind can only take us back. We have a new government in the state and we want a peaceful state, a peaceful community."
The Okpala-Uku's letter to the police read in part: "I, Egbononwu Ojugbeli, the Okpala-Uku (traditional ruler) of Umusadege Community, Utagba-Uno, hereby write to notify you of the postponement of Umusadege annual general meeting earlier scheduled for January 18, 2016 in my Palace owing to an imminent threat to peace and security. I most sincerely implore the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, to deploy policemen to Umusadege, Utagba-Uno on Monday, the 18th of January, 2016 to enforce this cancellation and help maintain peace and order in my community.
"I sincerely appeal to all the Ikpalas and other interests with contrary or divergent views to religiously respect the culture and tradition of our people by hearkening to the voice of wisdom and reason by keeping the peace and remain law abiding."
In another development, the member representing Ika South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Okoh Festus Chukwuyem, has warned against any attempt to cause crisis in Ika South Local Government Area by anybody "fighting for supremacy in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW)".
Chukwuyem gave the warning at the weekend while playing host to the Chairman, Delta State Council of NURTW, Chief Ifeanyi Obi, who led some officials of the body to consult with him on ways to nip in the bud impending leadership crisis in the area.
The lawmaker said: "What we want is peace, there is nothing that we are fighting for that we will take when we are leaving this world and I can confidently tell you that anybody who wants to cause trouble in Ika South will be dealt with according to the law. We don't want trouble of any kind. Nobody can be pleased 100 percent; so, accept the situation and let us live in peace."
