Contractors shun C’ River govt

Contractors handling projects for the 19th National Sports Festival have shunned the Cross River State Government’s directive to return to their building sites.
Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Asu Okang, had on December 22, 2015 directed all contractors to return to work on the grounds that they could not justify the over 60 per cent of contract money they got from the government.
Okang had promised that the state would host the Games in the second quarter of 2016.
Facilities to host the competition are spread across Calabar.
The new indoor sports hall, a swimming pool and other facilities at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar have been abandoned.
Our correspondent, who went round the facilities in Calabar on Saturday, observed that none of the contractors had obeyed the directive.
One of the security guards at the stadium, who identified himself as Ashie Mike, said apart from the main pitch, all other facilities are not ready.
“The main pitch looks ready but the basketball court and swimming pools have yet to be completed and no contractor has returned to site. Nothing has been done here in over six months,” he said
