How would you react to the claims by some Nigerians that nothing has changed since President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn into office about seven months ago?
I believe Nigerians should not be in a hurry to pass judgement on Buhari. I think it is too early to do so more especially when one realised that he inherited a lot of mess from the Jonathan administration. Jonathan’s PDP-led government messed up Nigeria, and without sounding or appearing to be parochial, recent revelations from the Dasuki armsgate scandal has revealed to Nigerians the extent of damage done to this nation.
For 16 years that PDP was in government, governance was on holiday and all manner of characters were on rampage looting Nigerian resources. In fact, a lot of things has changed since Buhari took over. It is no longer business as usual and today the fear of Buhari is the beginning of wisdom. Everybody knows that Buhari is aversed to corruption, and the man has been very meticulous in governance, and that is why all these looters are now being exposed. The return of Buhari to power through democracy is one of the best things to come out of Nigeria in recent time. I will rather enjoin Nigerians to support Buhari in his efforts to clear the mess inherited from the previous PDP-led government.
Again, unlike before when impunity seemed to be the order of the day, Nigerians today are gradually changing. The fear of government is there now. Sanity is gradually returning to the polity.
The war against corruption by President Buhari has been attracting mixed reactions with some people, saying that the crusade is one-sided, and that it is only PDP members that are being targeted, do you agree with these claims?
I totally disagreed. It is unfair to label Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade as one sided. Even civil servants, private individuals, businessmen and others are being investigated and anybody found to be wanting are put on trial by the EFCC. Remember, Mr President, shortly after he assumed office, publicly declared that he was for nobody but for everybody, and that has been his guiding principle since he started working. For those apologists of PDP, let me ask them this question, which political party does the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki belong to? The Senate President is a member of APC like the President. But Saraki today is undergoing trial, and President Buhari has not interfered with the trial or the judicial process. For 16 years PDP was in power at the federal level and the party had so more political appointees than APC.
It is, therefore, natural that the party which held more public positions should have more of its members under scrutiny.Corruption is a war we should all join hands to fight. It is a monstruous vice that is threatening to engulf the whole nation. PDP is trying to bring sentiments into the issue, nobody should take those complaining seriously. One thing I know for sure is that if you don’t have skeletons in the cupboard, then you don’t need to fear.
Corruption was taken to another height during the Jonathan administration. Imagine Jonathan was popular for saying that there was nothing like corruption but that what people were involved in was stealing. Tell me, what is the difference between corruption and stealing? Are they not one and the same? But for PDP, stealing and corruption are different.
Some Nigerians have also advised President Buhari to cut down on his foreign trips, that he should stay more at home to tackle domestic issues, do you agree?
I don’t believe that President Buhari has travelled to the extent of shirking his constitutional responsibility to Nigerians. What people should know is that these foreign trips are for different purposes but the ultimate benefit is that it will attract investments to the country. It will also earn Nigeria global recognition and respect.
For some people, Jonathan era still seemed far better than this dispensation where they claim that Nigerians’ sufferings and economic hardship have increased, do you agree with this assertion?
How can you compare light with darkness? Buhari represents light for Nigerians while PDP and Jonathan represent era of darkness. Nigerians are lucky that Jonathan lost his re-election bid, otherwise Nigeria would have been in a big mess now. Jonathan messed up Nigeria, and all of us are paying for it now. See how PDP members looted the nation’s treasury. Look at the revelations coming from Dasuki’s trial. PDP members should have covered their faces in shame.
APC is being labelled as party of inconclusiveness as a result of fall-outs from elections held in Bayelsa and Kogi states, what is your reaction to this?
What does PDP or these critics expect Buhari to do, to interfere with the electoral process? Neither the president nor APC will do that. The president is a democrat ad he will never interfere with INEC’s work. People that are in charge in INEC are up to the task, and I believe it will be unfair to start attacking the man in charge at INEC now.
APC has been accused of deliberately refusing to conduct local government elections in Lagos State over fear of losing to PDP, how far is this true?
Lagos State has always been an APC state. In actual fact, PDP is dead in the state. Tell Bode George, Ogunlewe and Obanikoro that they are day-dreaming if they think that they can win Lagos. What has been delaying the polls conduct has nothing to do with the state government. The State Independent Electoral Commission, I understand, is reviewing voters register and until the exercise is completed, the commission can’t be stampeded to hold the poll.
However, let me state this categorically that APC is ready for PDP and we are going to defeat the party. APC is going to use the council polls to finally retire Bode George, Ogunlewe and Obanikoro from politics . These people have no political relevance again. They will soon go into political oblivion.
President Buhari’s cabinet has been described by some people as comprising mostly of recycled politicians contrary to expectations of some Nigerians that the cabinet will be made up of technocrats and newbreed politicians, what is your view?
Forget the critics who will never see anything good in Buhari, the cabinet we have today is the best any president could wish to work with. To me, it is a dream cabinet. Look at eminent men and women with proven track record of achievements in public life, all represented in that cabinet. I implore Mr President and his team to continue the good work they are doing. They should not allow themselves to be distracted by arm-chair critics.
