Anti-graft war: Don’t be used against Buhari’s govt –SGF tells media

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal has denied that the anti-corruption war of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is selective and urged the media not to be used as tool to discredit the campaign.
Lawal said the president’s anti-corruption war is legal and within the Nigerian law.
Buhari’s administration has been accused of being selective and not following due process in the campaign against corruption. Speaking with the National Executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by its President, Waheed Odusile, Lawal said government was fighting a sincere battle against corruption.
“The fight against corruption is now going on with vigour. For the first time since our return to democracy 16 years ago, top public officials found to have betrayed public trust are being asked to account for their actions.
“They are being investigated and persecuted within the confines of the Nigerian law. Majority of Nigerians now believe that government is sincere in its battle against corruption.”
The SGF noted that Buhari, under one year in office, has shown determination to confront many challenges facing the nation, which includes the ailing economy to be tackled through the 2016 budget proposals.
According to him, the media has a major role to play in ensuring that the government achieves its key objectives of securing the nation, fight against corruption and restoring the economy.
In his remarks, Odusile said in carrying out its responsibility of monitoring governance, the media needs access to those in government for free flow of information.
Pointing out that the media is not an  enemy of the government, Odusile admitted that the media was presently going through difficult times in the country.
He urged the government to assist by lowering the tariffs on newsprints used by the print media and also look at the higher license fees being paid by broadcast media houses.
The NUJ national president also commended the government on its anti-corruption drive and securing the nation.
