Anambra stands still as Akpo marks Ofala Festival

Indeed it was a gathering of the who is who of Anambra State when sons and daughters of Akpo, both in Nigeria and the Diaspora returned home to mark the Second Ofala Festival and the Seventh Anniversary of His Royal Highness, Igwe Jonathan Obiajulu Okpalaezechi, Nnamoshimiri II of Akpo on the throne.
The two-day event, which kicked off on Tuesday, December 29, at the Igwe’s palace, witnessed music performances, carnivals and an award ceremony organised by Akpo Development Union.
Commenting on the significance of Ofala Festival, Dim David Obi, the Traditional Prime Minister of Akpo said: “Apko is celebrating the second Ofala of our Igwe. In Igbo culture, Ofala is two words joined together. They are ‘ofor’ and ‘ala’. ‘Ofo’ means the mantle of leadership, the power with which the Igwe has authority while ‘ala’ means the ground which takes care of everything hence we have ‘ofala.’
“Today, the Igwe is going to reveal a lot of things to us his subjects and give us food and drink and what he has in store for us. This practice is as old as Akpo itself.”
Commenting, President General of Akpo, GOC Ezeno said: “The Ofala festival is central to Igbo culture. It is celebrated every three years and it marks the beginning of new age grade.”
The event attracted local government chairmen, Igwes from cross Igboland, politicians, business tycoons and socialites, including Ichie Rommy Amandi Ezeonwuka, Oil & Gas and Real Estate mogul, Jude Onyebuchi,
Upholstery and textiles tycoon, Chief Alex Obiora, Professor Lawrence Amikwe, Dim, DG, Nigerian Nuclear Regulation Authority, Chief Cyprian Okechukwu Igwe, Prof Laz Ezenwaka, Kenneth Ezeiruoma, CEO, Shadow United Limited, Chief Chigozie Nwolisa, Chief Herbert Eze of NB plc and Chief Jude Chukwudi Obika, a philanthropist.
