The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has described the establishment of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo as the best thing to happen to medical education in the country.
The MDCN said this during a two-day advisory visit to the university in Ondo city.
A statement on Sunday by the institution’s Director of Public Relations, Mr. Ademola Babalola, quoted the leader of the MDCN team, Prof. Okechukwu Mbonu, as saying that UNIMED had the potential to become the hub of medical education in the sub-African region.
Mbonu commended the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, for the establishment of UNIMED, which is first of its kind in West Africa.
Mbonu said, “The MDCN is proud of Governor Olusegun Mimiko for the tremendous impact of his various health programmes. We are particularly happy and commend the governor for the establishment of the University of Medical Sciences. The university, apart from being the first in this part of the continent, also holds the key to becoming the hub of medical education even on the continent.
“We have gone round the university’s campus and we are quite impressed by the facilities, the management staff and the curricula. We hope and pray that the government would continue to strengthen its political will to make the institution work.
“We are also happy that Mimiko has picked the best person to pioneer the university. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Friday Okonofua, is one of the best in the medical profession and education.
“It will be a thing of joy to see the university achieving its set objectives with the steps being taken.”
Also, the Registrar of the MDCN, Dr. Abdulmumini Ibrahim, said the establishment of the University of Medical Sciences was a befitting compliment to the achievements of the Ondo State Government in health service delivery.
“The achievements of the state government are already known and have become the benchmark for even national health programmes. The Establishment of the medical university is a benefitting icing on the cake,” Ibrahim said when the MDCN paid a courtesy visit to Mimiko in Akure on Thursday.
Okonofua assured the MDCN team of five professors in different arms of medicine that UNIMED would deliver excellent education in medical sciences.
