A National Assembly member, Beni Lar, has confirmed plans by her colleagues in the lower chamber to better the lot of internally displaced persons, IDPs, in the country and fully reintegrate them into the society.
According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UNHCR, the population of IDPs in Nigeria following activities of Boko Haram terrorists in the North East part of the country has risen to 2.2 million.
Lar further decried activities of insurgents at the weekend on the sideline of the one year anniversary of Stefanos Foundation IDP Camp at Zang Commercial College in Jos. She said the House was doing all it could to arrest the situation and alleviate the suffering of displaced people.
She said: “As lawmakers, we are really concerned about the plight of IDPs. Recently, for the first time, the House inaugurated committee on IDPs. We realised that the mandate of NEMA, which is to intervene in emergency situation, is not enough because after one or two months, nobody remembers them again. So, the House is planning and has already requested members to submit names of affected and displaced persons, including reports to the committee so that starting from this Christmas onward the IDPs would be fully catered for by the government.”
