Buhari may have no time for parties, comedians –NYT

President Muhammadu Buhari may not have time for parties and comics as some of his predecessors did because of his seriousness in fixing the country, The New York Times has said.
It added that some former leaders in the country patronised comedians who performed at events organised by the government.
The New York Times stated, ‘‘When Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo was Nigeria’s military ruler between 1976 and 1979, he had shown little tolerance for criticism. But under democracy, Mr. Obasanjo championed comedians like Mr. Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere, (known as Ali Baba), who roasted him regularly, and recommended him for performances.’’
The NYT in a report last week titled, ‘Nigeria’s comics pull punch lines from deeper social ills, x-rays the booming comedy trade in Nigeria and how it became the country’s third biggest form of entertainment after movies and music since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
According to the report, as comedians have become powerful, some politicians have come to understand the benefits of serving as comic material.
