the Osun State Goveror, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has said his administration will not relent in its education reform programmes until cultism and other anti-social behaviours stopped in the state’s schools.
The governor, who said this in a statement on Sunday by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, blamed gangsterism in Osun schools on what he called years of neglect of the education sector in the state.
Aregbesola said rather than producing responsible persons, public schools in the state had been turned to a breeding place for miscreants, who had continuously been disrupting the peace of the schools.
The statement partly read, “What happened last week was just part of the remnants of the culture of violence inherited in our schools five years ago and which this administration has battled vigorously.
“It could have been worse, but the dogged pursuit of excellence in character moulding and academic brilliance under the present administration in the education sector have stemmed the tide and we are not relenting until we stamp out the last instance of anti-social behaviour in our schools.”
Some students, armed with locally-made guns and other dangerous weapons, had last week stormed the Anglican High School and Adenle Middle School in Osogbo, and chased their teachers away.
Aregbesola called on parents and guardians to ensure that they monitored their children and wards before and after school hours, saying the responsibility of moulding pupils’ character should not be left for the schools alone.
The governor said, “The construction of modern school structures, equipped fully with modern facilities, provision of attractive school uniforms, re-orientation of teachers and pupils, provision of modern learning tools such as e-learning tablets, ‘Opon Imo’ and other enviable projects of this administration, are aimed at changing the behavioural patterns of the pupils and making them feel confident that they can compete favourably with their peers anywhere in the world.
“While the government will not shy away from its responsibilities of giving the state an education sector that produces responsible citizens, parents have the task of monitoring their children before and after the school hours to ensure that the grooming efforts of the government do not go in vain.”
He, however, stated that the government would not hesitate to ensure that any pupil, who engaged in violence, was made to face the wrath of the law.
“We cannot afford to allow a few bad eggs to contaminate and corrupt the enviable and conducive learning environment we are striving hard to put in place in Osun as part of the enduring legacies of this government,” he added.
