Abia erupts in celebration
Abia State erupted in jubilation yesterday evening as the news of the cancellation of Abia North Senatorial District election filtered in.
Some residents from Abia North, who spoke to Daily Sun, lauded the verdict of the Court of Appeal, saying it was a sign of good things to come to the state, which they said had suffered a lot of neglect in the past eight years.
Kalu Ebem from Ohafia said he was happy over the judgment, adding that despite the declaration made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in respect of the election in the zone, which he said, was erroneously upheld by the lower tribunal, the people never voted for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election.
“We are happy and in jubilant mood over yesterday’s judgment of the Court of Appeal in Owerri because we know we did not vote for PDP in Abia North senatorial zone.
“I am happy that the Appeal Court has corrected the mistakes made by INEC in announcing some of the results they way they did and our man’s (OUK) case is the beginning of the good things to come”.
Okwara Onyekwere, from Item in Bende local government, said he was expecting the appellate tribunal to outrightly declare Kalu the winner, adding that the people would use the rerun to show that they never voted for the PDP in the first place.
“We know what happened during the election, if not for his detractors, most of whom he made politically, who turned the table against him, Kalu would have been in the Senate by now, but we are happy of this golden opportunity provided by the rerun, which will enable us elect a man that will represent us well not those that have been sleeping on the floor of the Senate since they went there in error,” he said.
They said with the judgment, democracy would take a firm root in the state.
