When Quedy tweeted he wanted to listen to Wande Coal’s new album with low expectation, it was a riot in me. I almost shot him a reply. Nobody goes into a listening session of a Wande Coal and not expect ‘too much.’
Now sampling this new album, going in with low expectations.....I hope to be positively disappointed. #wanted
As difficult as it would be not to compare albums – albeit the charting singles, all we hold Wande Coal to is an album – Mushin to Mo’hits (before now). Through the period of six years, the recently released ‘Wanted’ album is the most anticipated Nigerian album EVER. If you understand the brilliance and where Mushin to Mo’hits sits the annals of Nigerian pop culture, you’d see this is probably the only authoritative proclamation here – for your critics.
Again, What was wrong with #Wanted?
Don Jazzy. No Don Jazzy.
Just to be certain I was not asking too much from the Black Diamond (Just repeat what you did with M2M, for me and I would be fine), I got the Mushin to Mo’Hits album and it only made me see the let-down with the #Wanted album. Wande Coal didn’t understand the anticipation was fever high even dropping the album should scare him – He only saw the clamour.
For an album that took this long to make, Wanted is just a little over average. A couple of good songs here and there tho.
Here, if ‘Wanted’ was released under a year after ‘M2M,’ It would have been a probably great followup but not six years after. ‘Wanted’ now is a product of quick sessions with all the featured producers – who really did give their best in the area of production but Wande or his team just didn’t know how to finish songs and an eventual album – a role played by Don Jazzy for him before.
During media rounds in recent weeks, Wande Coal revealed that he had an album made with Don Jazzy before he left Mavin – my thoughts – it should have been important that he got tracks if not that album released. I have listened over and over to his reasons for leaving Mavin and I fail to see the rationale. He didn’t have a ‘written’ contract with Mavin and he could negotiate everything – jus have that discussion (from credible sources during Wande’s exit, I understood how ‘important’ Wande Coal was to Don Jazzy – his exit was a huge blow to the stunned Jazzy), shouldn’t that be a reason to stay on and enjoy the guidance of Don Jazzy, that has proven again and again that he can deliver. There is more to what happened. Nothing great happens without RISK, yes? This is not it for Wande. Put out the album that you finished (or working) with Jazzy and you probably should then risk it.
To give one to Wande Coal, nobody might have been able to serve a befitting comeback especially with the expectation from millions of fan (not a niche act) but an EPIC comeback with ‘Wanted’ would have drove the Black Diamond close to his untouchable space in the annals of Nigerian pop and music circuit industry.
What else was wrong with #Wanted? The desire to be ‘international,’ I blame everything Wizkid here
Sadly the Gems on the album are ‘Super woman’ and ‘Wanted’ (as I continue listening to the album and hope more tracks grow on me) delivered in totally Wande style – throwing words like ‘love you gardually’ and ‘casually’ around or a airtight hook complimented by the Major bangz’ thumping and trademark instrumentation (thank goodness he didn’t feature Chidinma – why? story for another day).
Let’s wait and have the album grow on us? Not in this ‘JET’ age even that approach for 2face’s albums hasn’t made his recent albums top contenders for his best albums ever. This has never been the way for a Wande Coal album.
My fear again, Wande Coal seeing the need to sign new acts to the Black Diamond label shouldn’t been in his view (he revealed this in the MTV Base Real Talk interview recently). Dude, you just have two albums. Leave labelling for the future at least 2 albums after #Wanted – goal should solely be legendary status!
Wande Coal needs another DON JAZZY (since he has made it clear he is not going back) and this is talking from what #Wanted is – I pray I am proven wrong!
Or Maybe, he is still getting use to being in-charge of his sh*t,
This writer shld get lost and go and return jazzy's money, obviously you were paid to say this shit, everybody cannot be under jazzy, if Don jazzy is a god as you claim why didn't he make the prince a legend or even Dr sid? God will surely disappoint you as wanted will grow to success
