Lagos crime rate may rise, Adeola warns

The senator representing Lagos-West senatorial district, Solomon

Adeola, says due to its status as a megacity, the crime rate in Lagos

State may continue to rise.

He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to give Lagos a special

status.

Adeola, who is popularly known as Yayi, said this in a statement by his

Media Adviser, Kayode Odunaro, on Monday.

While commending the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, for

inaugurating patrol vehicles and other crime-fighting equipment, the

senator called on the Federal Government to augment Ambode’s efforts.

The lawmaker explained that due to its large population, Lagos would

continue to have challenges in tackling crime.

He said, “Lagos State deserves a special status in the area of security

as the economic nerve centre of Nigeria and its burgeoning population as

a megacity. There is a need for more security infrastructure for the

state as its population of over 20 million of all manner of people from

across Nigeria and beyond indicates the likelihood of a high incidence of

crime over time.”

Adeola, who represents the most populous senatorial district in Nigeria,

said the level of crime in the state was not radically different from

that of any other state, adding that the seemingly high incidence of

crime reflected the huge population of the state.

He added, “Reports of high incidence of crime in Lagos in recent times

are only a reflection of the dire economic situation of the nation and

the massive concentration of people in millions in Lagos State.

“For instance, if you have a one per cent crime rate in a state of say

2.5 million people, then it is conceivable that the percentage will be

higher in a cosmopolitan state like Lagos with over 20 million people

coupled with the reportage of the incidence by the media which is equally

concentrated in Lagos.”
