A former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) and a chief of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Magnus Abe, on Monday, reinforced allegations concerning the last governorship election in Rivers State, saying he never voted in any of the 2015 general elections in the State.
He spoke with journalists in Abuja in his reaction to the closing of the APC’s case at the Rivers State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.
Abe, however, expressed confidence in the ability of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man to dispense justice on the matter.
He said, “We have closed our case and we thank God for giving us the opportunity to ensure that the case is heard because there were many interlocutory processes to ensure that the case is not heard within the stipulated period.
“The judiciary is the last hope of the common man. There was no other possibility of us getting redress anywhere apart from the courts. This is where we ought to be and this is where we are. We believe in the judiciary. Our case is that what happened in Rivers State was that there was no election. We don’t believe in the exercise that took place in the last election.
“It was not the basis under which anybody could hold office in Rivers State. There was no election in Rivers State and as a serving Senator, I did not vote in any of the elections conducted in 2015. Contrary to reports, we didn’t withdraw from the election, there were no result sheets.”
Reacting to the probe panel set up by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, to probe the N8.45 billion allegedly spent by ex-governor Rotimi Amaechi on the failed Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte Hospital, Abe said, “I feel that the panel was not a judicial commission but a political commission of enquiry because the outcome appeared to have been predetermined before it was set up.
“So we don’t expect that Amaechi and those who served under him would get justice. It was set up to indict people from gaining job in the Federal Government. The attitude and comments of the key actors show they are up to something else.”
