Whereas the Ooni of Ife died in July and up till now a new monarch has not been chosen for the people of Ile-Ife, the Itsekiris in Delta State have announced a new Olu of Warri two weeks after the passing of the previous monarch, Ogiame Atuwatse II.
At a ceremony which was held at the Ode-Itsekiri (Big Warri), the traditional headquarters of the Itsekiri, the passing of the former ruler was formally announced while one of the late Olu’s younger brothers, Prince Godfrey Ikenwoli Emiko (Abiloye), was announced as the Olu-designate.
Announcing both the passage of Atuwatse II and the choice of Prince Ikenwoli to the Itsekiri National Congress, the eldest member of the Olu Advisory Council, Chief Tesigiweno Yahya Pessu, also performed the traditional ‘breaking of the calabash’, which represents the death of the king.
