Ondo 2016: Akure indigenes reject dep gov position

Some Akure indigenes under the aegis of the Akure Renaissance Group have said an Akure indigene must become the next governor of the state.

The group said they would not accept a deputy governorship position ahead of the 2016 governorship election in the state.

This was contained in a statement issued in Akure, the state capital, on Wednesday by the coordinator of the group, Mr. Ayodeji Akinyemi.

The ARG also pointed out that Akure has many qualified persons that can occupy the number one position in the state, and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that an Akure indigene emerges as the next governor of the state.

The statement called on all indigenes of Akure at home and abroad to support this cause and see it as a collective agitation that should not be left in the hands of a few.

The statement read, “We should come together in the interest of socio-economic and political development of Akure. It is untrue to say that Akure has no serious candidates for the governorship position. Akure has sons and daughters of proven integrity and honour who are fit for the job.

“In every democratic dispensation, Akure has been cheated, marginalised and relegated to the background in spite of its potential and human resources. Akure, with its voting strength, had assisted other ethnic groups to get the number one seat.

“Without prejudice, Akure has the largest voting power in Ondo State, this is evidently clear in all the previous elections where the Akure votes surpassed every other local governments’.

“It surpassed the four Akoko local government areas put together. Therefore, it would be unjust and unfair if the political gladiators fail in their plans to allow an Akure indigene to be the next governor.”

The group, therefore, called on the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, to make a pronouncement that all indigenes and every resident of the town must embrace the aspiration.
