Memo to parents: Femi Falana dropped the law talk for once and spoke about his son, Falz the badt guy

Here’s a cool story for you: Femi Falana is one of Nigeria’s most prominent lawyers. His wife, Funmi, is also a lawyer, and so is one of his sons, Folarin. One day Folarin, who was working in his father’s law chambers walked up to him and said that he was resigning from the firm, not to take up job in some other chamber, but to become a musician. And that was how fast rising entertainer, Falz the badt guy, was born.

His father, Femi Falana, disclosed this while speaking as a guest speaker at a valedictory service and prize giving day ceremony of Crown Heights College, Ibadan.

Femi Falana did not struggle with his son’s choice to become a comedian/musician, according to his narration at the event. However, his wife Funmi found it hard to accept.

“My son Folarin, who was working in our chambers, came to inform me one day that he wanted to leave. I said I could find him a place in one of my friends’ chambers. But he said no, ‘I’m going to be a musician’. When I asked why, he convinced me but he couldn’t convince his mother because she’s also a lawyer. Today, he’s doing well as a musician and not as a lawyer. So let’s debate with our children to know what they want to do,” Falana said.

He advised parents not to “force any course on your children; don’t insist that they must be a doctor or a lawyer.”

Apart from the example of his son, he also mentioned that of the late Nigerian music legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, who chose to study music against his parents’ wish for him to become a medical doctor.
